Every car enthusiast knows the feeling. A beautiful corner, a quiet road, a car that responds exactly as expected, and suddenly everything else fades into the background. That’s driving pleasure.
A recent study from Castrol set out to discover what actually happens when drivers genuinely enjoy being behind the wheel. During a series of tests on closed circuits and driving courses, participants were equipped with devices that monitored brain activity, heart rate, eye movement, and stress levels. The goal? To uncover what really creates the famous “thrill of driving.” Source: Castrol EDGE, The Science Behind the Thrill of Driving.
The findings are fascinating. More than outright speed, it is control, focus, and engagement that appear to be the key ingredients of driving enjoyment. Even during karting sessions and an off-road drive at just 8 km/h, researchers recorded strong positive responses. Whenever drivers became fully immersed in the driving experience and remained in control, driving pleasure reached its peak.
For Driver Community, this comes as no surprise. Driving pleasure is one of the reasons our community exists in the first place. We’ve always known that the best drives are not necessarily the fastest ones. It’s all about the connection between the car, the road, and the moment.
This study nicely confirms what many enthusiasts experience every day: you don’t need extreme speeds to enjoy driving. A great route, a winding road, a fun car, and a smiley face next to you are often more than enough.
Perhaps this research will also help put an end to a persistent misconception. Most car enthusiasts are not chasing speed for the sake of speed. They enjoy engineering, involvement, control, and the unique experience that driving can provide. And now there is even scientific evidence to support that idea.
To Driver Community, this all sounds perfectly logical. Our best memories rarely come from setting a speed record. They come from an epic road trip, an unexpectedly stunning mountain pass, a perfectly executed corner, or simply a drive with like-minded petrolheads.
In other words: driving pleasure is not about how fast you go, but about how engaged you are in the journey.
And that’s exactly why we keep driving. ❤️
